Cody Gakpo has been withdrawn from international duty with the Netherlands after suffering a nasty-looking ankle injury during a 2-1 win over Serbia on Sunday evening.
The Dutchman has been enjoying some fine form this season, scoring two goals and assisting four for Liverpool in their opening games of the campaign.
This comes after he almost sealed an £80m move to Manchester City before Liverpool pulled the plug.
Gakpo will now miss the remaining two games of the international break and is returning to Liverpool for consultations with the club’s medical team at the AXA Training Centre.

It will be an awful blow if Gakpo is injured given his form this season, but also given the incredibly challenging period he and his wife have endured since losing their unborn child during pregnancy in the summer. I have been beyond impressed with how he has managed such a massive personal loss while also being told his career move was to be denied.
Gakpo has quickly become my favourite Liverpool player over the last two months due to his character, and I hope this injury is something he can bounce back from quickly.
The former PSV Eindhoven star opened up to The Guardian about the challenges he has faced recently.
He said: “I don’t know if you want to go there [in detail] because it doesn’t make any sense now to speak about this,
“But it was a difficult summer for me, and my family, and everything surrounding football and life. So, yes – I just let it come, and it ended how it ended.
“Yes, [it is the life of a footballer]. I cannot choose. I have to just try to do what I’m good at – and that’s playing football. I can be very worried about everything that could happen, or that didn’t happen, or whatever, but that wouldn’t help the situation, would it?
“It’s a very long story. The summer was very tough regarding everything. I just let everything be and see how it came and it worked out in this way, which now it is what it is. I just want to enjoy my life with my family and friends, and my life playing football with my team-mates here and at the club.”
