A varied Monday for Everton, with the implications of Manchester City’s financial case unexpectedly reaching the Blues and Megan Finnigan reflecting on her long road back from an ACL injury.
There has also been the fallout from the Women’s derby defeat at Anfield, while Vitalii Mykolenko and Braiden Graham could add to Everton’s international minutes before the day is out.
Everton appeal takes on wider significance
The most significant off-field development concerns Everton’s forthcoming appeal against the compensation awarded to Burnley. Litigation editor Christian Smith believes the case could establish an important precedent for the way clubs seek damages following rule breaches, something that has taken on fresh significance following the latest reports surrounding Manchester City.
Everton were ordered to pay Burnley £26m plus interest, taking the potential bill to around £35m, after an independent commission concluded their 2021/22 PSR breach had caused financial loss. The club is appealing that decision. Read Everton

£28.9m Everton figure emerges from City model
That wasn’t the only City-related story with an Everton angle. OLBG has calculated that Everton could theoretically have earned £28,944,186 more in Premier League merit payments across the seasons covered by City’s case, with Liverpool’s figure in the same exercise put at £24,423,357.
That doesn’t mean Everton are due almost £29m or that the Premier League has decided to redistribute historic prize money. It remains a third-party modelling exercise, but it does provide an eye-catching estimate of the financial difference changes in league position could have made.
Finnigan reflects on 602-day absence
Megan Finnigan’s return to WSL football provided a more personal story from Sunday’s Merseyside derby. The Everton captain came off the bench against Liverpool just four days after making her first competitive appearance for the club in 602 days following an ACL injury.
Finnigan described the comeback as a “rollercoaster” and explained that returning to fitness hasn’t meant the end of the process, with form, confidence and trust still to be rebuilt. She was equally candid about the derby, admitting Everton were second best and too indecisive in their pressing.
Anfield run ends as Liverpool win derby
Sunday’s result brought Everton’s remarkable Anfield record to an end. Beata Olsson and Cornelia Kapocs scored as Liverpool won 2-0, ending the Blues’ sequence of six successive WSL victories at the ground.
Ruby Mace was our standout Everton performer despite the defeat, earning 7.5/10 in the player ratings. Vignola and Clare Wheeler were among the others to emerge with credit.
