Alexis Mac Allister has made it clear what he thinks about not being handed a new Liverpool deal, but now a promising claim has emerged regarding his future.
The 27-year-old had an extremely poor 2025/26 season by his high standards, standing out as one of the Reds’ poorest performers throughout the campaign.
Mac Allister has been vocal recently about not being given a contract extension by Liverpool, claiming he has been hurt by others getting new deals and not him:
“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad,” he told reporters on Tuesday. Everyone can see I give 100 percent for this football club, every single day in training, games.
“Of course, I can have very good games, bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best. I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine.”
But speaking to Football Insider, journalist Pete O’Rourke claimed that Mac Allister could yet get his wish at the end of this season, even though progress is slow currently:
“He’s got two years left on his current contract as well, he says he’s happy Liverpool will continue to give his all between now and then. Mac Allister is in control right now, if he can perform well become a key man in Andoni Iraola’s side then there’s every possibility that those contract talks could reopen.
“Mac Allister does seem like he has won the faith of Iraola as he is becoming a starter in that midfield ahead of Gravenberch as well. So all he can do right now is continue to impress and perform at a high level, and if he continues to do that there’s every chance a new contract could be discussed.
“Liverpool have not closed the door on it, but it does seem they will wait until closer to the end of the season to see if Mac Allister can improve on last season’s performances.”
Alexis Mac Allister merits new Liverpool deal
As mentioned, Mac Allister was desperately poor last season, but he was playing in a struggling Liverpool side, and in a squad coping with the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
Since his comments about his contract, the Argentine has been superb, standing out as the Reds’ best midfielder in 2026/27 to date, scoring excellent goals against Atletico Madrid and Tottenham.
On this evidence, Mac Allister warrants a new deal, and he is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League when he is at his best, being lauded by Conor Bradley in the past:
“He’s just an unbelievable footballer. I’ve never seen someone retain the ball so well. He’s so calm on the ball and he’s so composed. He’s just a wonderful footballer and he’s a joy to play with. I can’t praise him enough, to be honest.”
It’s now a case of Mac Allister continuing to play at this level this season and not dropping off – if that happens, it is hard not to see his Liverpool stay being extended.
