What did you do to the offense?
About a little over a year-and-a-half ago, the Bucs had one of the best offensive lines in the NFL.
Last year that same line was destroyed by injuries. Along comes this year and the Bucs’ line is back together. Healthy. At times, they look like they never played together.
What the hell has happened? Yeah, Joe expects the line to play better as the season grows old. That’s just natural. Problem is, the Bucs’ season is on the brink.
And now they have to block for a rookie undrafted free agent at quarterback who has a grand total of four snaps to his NFL career.
Fun times.
Today in his day-after presser, KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles said there is plenty of blame to go around.
> “It’s a little bit of everything,” Bowles said of the line struggles on offense. “Whether we’re holding it too long, whether somebody’s not open, whether we’ve got to get rid of the football or whatever the case may be.
>
> “We’ve got to shorten the passing game in some way, shape or form. We’ve got to block it better up front fundamentally and technically, and we’ve got to coach it better. So, it’s a combination of everything. It’s never just one thing that happens.”
Joe wishes he was at One Buc Palace today to find out what exactly Bowles meant by “shorter.” Shorter routes? Shorter windows? Shorter time to unload the ball?
Maybe all of the above?
Whatever it is, this offense is a trainwreck. Throwing to Payne Durham when Chris Godwin is open, using a mid tight end as the focal point of the offense, putting tight ends or backs into A-gaps to block, JOe could go on. This Bucs offense is a joke right now.
Maybe for Zac Robinson it is a good thing that Mayfield got hurt. If the Bucs didn’t need him to work with an undrafted rookie free agent of a quarterback, Robinson might have been fired this morning.
Yes, it is that bad.
