Nick Sirianni Explains Reaction to Jalen Hurts Concussion Check After Costly Eagles Turnover 1
Nick Sirianni was clearly frustrated on Monday night, but his response to a costly delay was calmer than many expected. The Philadelphia Eagles fell 27-7 to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, their first loss of 2026 after wins over Washington and Tennessee. Jalen Hurts was pulled off the field during a key drive, and Sirianni soon explained how he saw it.

Midway through the second quarter, Hurts scrambled toward the sideline and took a late hit from Bears linebacker D’Marco Jackson. An independent neurotrauma consultant called for a concussion evaluation, and Hurts was sent to the blue medical tent.

Andy Dalton replaced him for four plays. The Eagles had first-and-goal at the Chicago 1-yard line but could not score. On third-and-goal, Dalton threw an interception to rookie safety Dillon Thieneman in the end zone. Hurts was cleared soon after.
At halftime, the coach addressed the moment with ESPN’s Lisa Salters.
“Obviously frustrating, but the doctors have to do their job,” Sirianni said. “They’ve got to protect these guys. We had a hit on a sideline that they looked yet.”
He noted the team wanted to run the ball in from the 1-yard line regardless of who was at quarterback, but accepted that the medical staff was protecting players.
“We’ve got to be able to run the ball there. We’ve gotta take care of the ball with Andy. They are doing their best to keep the players safe,” Sirianni added.
Hurts returned on the next drive and scored on a sneak as the first half ended, cutting Chicago’s lead to 10-7. It was not the first time this season Sirianni reacted to a hit on his quarterback. He also spoke angrily with a referee after a hard tackle in the Week 1 win over Washington.
The second half raised bigger questions about the offense.

The second half brought little relief. Philadelphia’s first three possessions all ended in three-and-outs. Chicago quarterback Case Keenum, making his first start since 2023, found Kalif Raymond for a 41-yard touchdown to make it 20-7.
Hurts then threw an interception to T.J. Edwards on a fourth-down try. Keenum finished 24 of 34 for 247 yards and two touchdowns, then ran in another score late.

Hurts is learning a new offense under a booth play-caller, and A.J. Brown is now in New England. The Eagles entered Monday ranked 29th in offensive success rate, and tight end Dallas Goedert was unavailable. Hurts completed only one pass of 20 yards or more.
The Eagles drop to 2-1 and must reset quickly. They host the Los Angeles Rams at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, October 4, at 1 p.m. ET. Chicago faces the New York Jets that same day. Both teams will look to build on Week 3.
