The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a complete collapse on Monday Night Football, dropping an ugly 27-7 disaster to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. Facing a Chicago squad forced to start 38-year-old third-string quarterback Case Keenum, Philadelphia looked completely lost on both sides of the ball from the opening kickoff.
Keenum systematically dismantled the Philadelphia defense, throwing two touchdown passes and adding a rushing score. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia offense never found a groove against Chicago's aggressive front. The Eagles mustered just 248 total yards and converted a putrid 22% of their third-down attempts.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts briefly exited the game in the second quarter for a concussion evaluation before returning, but he struggled to stay clean in the pocket. Philadelphia turned the ball over three times on the night, including an interception thrown by backup Andy Dalton while Hurts was in the tent, an interception by Hurts in the third quarter, and a lost fumble. The team's solitary score came on a classic Hurts quarterback sneak right before halftime.
As frustration boiled over on the sideline, broadcast cameras caught head coach Nick Sirianni venting during an NSFW outburst. After the final whistle, Sirianni refused to hide behind excuses for the embarrassing effort, taking full responsibility for the defeat while calling out the entire coaching staff.
“I think we all have to own that loss right there. I don't think anybody coached well. I don't think anyone played well. That was a true team loss,” Sirianni said. “I have to look at myself first. We weren't ready to coach, we weren't ready to play, and that ultimately starts and ends with me.” For a franchise harboring Super Bowl ambitions, getting thoroughly dominated by a third-string quarterback is a massive wake-up call.
Now sitting at 2-1 on the young season, Philadelphia faces an urgent need to clean up its execution and communication errors. If Sirianni wants his squad to bounce back quickly, that accountability must immediately translate onto the practice field this week.
