Ex-Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper backs Man City chairman over charges

Former Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Joe Hart has backed Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak’s claim that the club is innocent of breaching financial rules.

The former Shrewsbury goalkeeper said he “loved” Al Mubarak’s letter in response to the Premier League’s case against City, insisting he has no reason to doubt the chairman’s commitment to proving the club’s innocence.

Al Mubarak said he remained committed to “proving the club’s innocence” and that the process “still has a long way to run”.

Hart, who made the comments on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, said: “I’ve heard everyone else go down every single rabbit hole, every single wormhole, every single discussion.

“My honest opinion is I’ve got no reason not to trust Khaldoon. What he said is enough for me.

“I loved how he spoke. I loved the letter because that was from someone who cared about the club.”

Hart made 58 appearances for his boyhood club Shrewsbury before joining City in a deal worth more than £1 million in 2006.

He went on to make 348 appearances for City between 2006 and 2016, winning two Premier League titles, two League Cups and the FA Cup.

The 39-year-old added that there was currently “nothing concrete” to change his view and that he was content to let the process “play out”.

He also insisted his achievements at City were not tarnished by the ongoing case.

Hart added: “If Man City are found guilty, which I don’t think they are because of what Khaldoon said, then there’s conversations to be had.

“But right now I’m very confident and very, very calm. I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved and what I did with Manchester City and what we achieved as a team. And that doesn’t change. That doesn’t change until you tell me.”
