Just weeks before the current season started, Eddie Howe left Newcastle United – and it feels like Everton could make a lot of sense as his next job.
Howe’s decision to leave St. James’ Park was a big story, given he was one of the longest-serving managers in the Premier League and that he had done such great work there.
But some Magpies fans also thought it was his time to go, despite the less-than-ideal timing.
Speculation is already rife about what his next project will be. Given all he achieved at Newcastle, his stock is certainly high.
And following the release of a new report yesterday about what he’s currently up to, one can’t help but feel that Everton might be a great next job for him.
Why Eddie Howe could be the next Everton manager
First and foremost, David Moyes is the absolutely perfect manager for Everton at this moment in time. Let’s make that quite clear.
He came in for a fair bit of criticism for the way Everton finished last season, overseeing a run of seven games without a victory. But the picture has changed a lot since then, with the Everton squad having been left really short after a poor end to the transfer window. We have all seen how well Moyes works when there is adversity.
We must also respect the work he has already done overall since coming back for a second spell in January 2025.
But Everton could be heading for a situation next year whereby a new manager will be needed.
Moyes’ current contract is up at the end of the season and it might be a moment to make a change, rather than stick with the Scot. It will likely depend on what Everton have achieved in 2026/27. Arguably though, anything less than European qualification should embolden Everton to make a change.
According to a report from The Telegraph on Monday, Eddie Howe is ‘not thinking about football at all, he is not thinking about another job and currently has no plans to return to management’. That is completely fair enough given the intensity of top-level football management.
Currently, he is taking time out to spend time with his family and also work on his own fitness.
But come next summer, he might be ready to dive back in – and Everton could be the project for him.
There is a suggestion in the piece that big, underachieving clubs could appeal to Howe. Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are all listed as possible next destinations.
But Everton surely also fall into this category, having been languishing at the wrong end of the table for too many years now.
With Moyes’ contract up at the end of the season, it feels like it could naturally be a good time for Howe to return to the game and Everton to bring someone in who can take the team to the next level, like he did at Newcastle, who are in many ways a similar club.
Once again, Moyes is doing a great job with Everton. But Everton officials have to think about the endgame. The Scot is a floor-raiser, but it can also be argued he is a ceiling-capper.
Eddie Howe’s record at Newcastle
Games managed – 231
Wins – 116
Draws – 43
Losses – 74
Points per game – 1.69
Goals scored – 417
Goals conceded – 311
Trophies – 1
Howe won Newcastle their first trophy in 70 years when he won the Carabao Cup and he became an adored figure for one of the most passionate and loyal fanbases in the game.
There are also a plethora of exciting young English talents on the books at Everton right now, which is bound to be something that will appeal to Howe. Since it looks like Thomas Tuchel will lead the England team into the Euros in 2028, perhaps Everton could be the next best thing.
It is also on record that Howe supported Everton growing up, so there is that…
