Liverpool striker scores first international goal in Nations League 2026/27 group win

Liverpool’s international players have made an impact this month, but the break has also brought fitness concerns.

Cody Gakpo hit a stoppage-time volley on Thursday to earn the Netherlands a 1-1 draw with Germany in Amsterdam, in Xavi Hernandez and Jurgen Klopp’s first match as head coach.

Alexander Isak scored for Sweden the next day, finishing a pass from Yasin Ayari to open the scoring in a 2-1 Nations League win over Romania.

Kostas Tsimikas crossed for Greece’s 94th-minute winner against Serbia. He played the full 90 minutes when Greece later beat Germany 1-0, while Virgil van Dijk completed the win over Serbia for the Netherlands.

Ryan Gravenberch started that game and was replaced in the 67th minute.

Two Liverpool forwards also picked up injuries.

Liverpool said Isak has returned from international duty with a minor injury, and Sweden manager Graham Potter said it was a thigh problem sustained in the Romania game.

Gakpo came off in the 17th minute of the Netherlands’ 2-1 win over Serbia with an apparent ankle injury. He has since withdrawn from the Dutch squad to be assessed by Liverpool’s medical staff.

Another Liverpool forward also scored on Monday.

Keyrol Figueroa scored his first senior international goal in the 14th minute of Honduras’ 1-0 win over Jamaica in the Concacaf Nations League. It was his first start for Honduras.

The move began with his half-brother, Dereck Moncada, who passed to Deybi Flores. Flores combined with Jonathan Toro, whose pass set up Figueroa to score from close range.

Moncada was sent off in the 68th minute for an elbow on Ronaldo Webster. Honduras defended their lead with ten men.

Keyrol Figueroa was substituted for Bryan Rochez in the 74th minute, with reports that he left with an injury.

The result gave Honduras their first win in Kingston and their first points of this Nations League campaign.

They had lost 3-2 at home to Suriname on Friday, in coach Jose Francisco Molina’s first official match.

Honduras play Martinique on October 2 and finish the group against Jamaica in Tegucigalpa on October 5.

Figueroa is currently on loan at Port Vale for the 2026-27 season and turned 20 on August 31. He scored 12 goals in 15 Premier League 2 appearances for Liverpool’s U21s last season.

The striker was born in Honduras and made his senior international debut in a friendly against Argentina this summer. He previously represented the United States at youth level.
