Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo became the latest forward to pick up an injury during the international break, as per latest news. Netherlands boss Xavi Hernandez shared an update on how bad the damage might actually be. The player is set to leave the Dutch side due to the injury.

Cody Gakpo leaves Dutch camp after injury

Gakpo has now withdrawn from the national camp following his ankle injury. He lasted just 17 minutes on the pitch during the Netherlands’ fixture with Serbia in the Nations League before he was forced off after a tackle from Sasa Lukic. The Liverpool forward tried to battle through the discomfort, but medical staff eventually decided he could not continue and Ruben Van Bommel came on in his place.

Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, Dutch head coach Xavi gave a calm but cautious update on the situation. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, the manager said, “I don’t think so. It’s his ankle, that’s all I know. Tomorrow(Monday) we will know, but hopefully it’s not too important.” Gakpo had actually started the international break in great form, having scored in the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Germany just days earlier. That makes this new setback feel even more frustrating for fans back on Merseyside.

Liverpool’s growing injury concerns

Andoni Iraola already faces a shortage of options through the middle. Hugo Ekitike remains sidelined, and Alexander Isak was also forced to withdraw from the Sweden squad due to a thigh problem. With both strikers dealing with fitness issues, many had expected Gakpo to be pushed into a more central role once club football resumed after the break.

Instead, the Reds boss now has to plan without any certainty over his attacking unit heading into a demanding Premier League run. Liverpool’s medical team is expected to assess Gakpo thoroughly once he returns to the AXA Training Centre. The club will want clarity before deciding how much rest he truly needs.

Gakpo stepping up for the Reds this season

The timing stings even more once you look at how key Gakpo has been for Liverpool this season. He has contributed 6 goal involvements in all competitions, made up of 2 goals and 4 assists. This is more than any other player at the club. His 13 created chances also rank second only to Dominik Szoboszlai among Liverpool players.

Gakpo’s 2026/27 stats for Liverpool so far, as per FOTMOB:

Competitions Appearances Goals Assists Chances Created

Premier League 5 1 3 11

EFL Cup 1 1 1 2

This shows just how central he has become to the team’s attacking rhythm. The good news is that the Merseyside club do not return to league action until they host Manchester City on October 11. This gives Gakpo a reasonable window to recover if the injury turns out to be minor. Still, the club will be hoping the scan brings better news than feared. Losing another attacker right now would be a huge and difficult blow to absorb.
