Former Manchester City soccer player Courtney Meppen-Walter has died aged 32.
Bury Football Club, among several clubs he represented, confirmed his sudden passing in a statement released on social media on Tuesday. Meppen-Walter, a father residing in Heywood who was convicted of causing the deaths of a brother and sister in a car crash in 2013, was a former England U18 international and came through City's academy.
He also turned out for Carlisle United, Stockport County, and subsequently featured for non-league sides throughout the region. No information regarding the circumstances of his death has been disclosed. In a statement, Bury FC said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Courtney Meppen-Walter, at the age of 32.
"The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Bury FC are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time."
Meppen-Walter received a custodial sentence in February 2013 for causing the deaths of a brother and sister in a car crash.
At 18 years old, he was imprisoned for 16 months after a silver Mercedes Elegance CDI car he was driving collided with a red Nissan Micra while traveling at nearly double the 30mph speed limit in Cheetham Hill.
The collision claimed the lives of Kulwant Singh, 32, who was driving the Micra, and his 37-year-old sister Ravel Kaur, who was a front-seat passenger, both from Salford.
The victims arrived in the United Kingdom in 2001 seeking a fresh start after escaping persecution at the hands of the Taliban, Manchester Crown Court was told.
Meppen-Walter was freed, having served just four months of his sentence.
At the time, he took to social media to post: ''I wish there was a switch I could click.
"To turn back time. And take back everything that happened — Amen."
He subsequently departed Manchester City.
Spells at Carlisle United, Ashton United, and Chorley followed, before he went on to represent Stockport County and several non-league outfits across the north west, among them Radcliffe.
He joined Bury before being released following a non-league loan spell in 2025. It is believed he was unattached at the time of his death.
