Gakpo, Isak and Chiesa: Liverpool injury news update and return dates as international break causes chaos

The latest Liverpool injury list and potential return dates as several Reds stars feature during the international break

Liverpool’s wait to make their return to Premier League action continues this week, as the extended international break rolls on. Before things came to an abrupt halt for three weeks, the Reds had picked up some decent momentum, continuing their unbeaten start to the campaign in all competitions with back-to-back wins against Spurs and Bournemouth.

As things stand, the Reds are sixth in the Premier League after five matches, six points off league leaders Manchester City, whose international break will be somewhat less comfortable given the high profile drama they current find themselves embroiled in. The two sides will meet as soon as the break concludes, in a box office Sunday afternoon clash at Anfield next month.

A packed October will see the Reds play a further five times across all competitions - which is notable, given that those games will be squeezed into less than three weeks. As the Reds not in international duty work hard behind the scenes, and those joining up with their national sides play on the world stage, we’ve got the latest Liverpool injury news and potential return dates.

How long will Isak be injured for?

Liverpool’s star striker Alexander Isak left international duty with Sweden following an impressive display against Romania. He played the full ninety minutes of the match and scored in the 2-1 victory, but manager Graham Potter revealed after the game that he had suffered a thigh injury that would end his involvement during the current international break.

The good news for the Reds is that Potter very much played down the significance of the issue. He described it as a “small problem” and suggested it would be exacerbated if he was expected to continue playing during such a tightly packed set of Nations League fixtures. With suitable rest, he’s likely to be back time to play Man City on 11th October.

Elsewhere, Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo has also been forced to abandon international duty, after being on the receiving end of a brutal challenge while playing for the Netherlands against Serbia. He suffered an ankle injury, the severity of which is currently unclear. However, unlike Isak, he is currently a serious doubt for face City next month.

Liverpool also have a handful of long-term injury problems that are slowly on their way towards being resolved. Federico Chiesa could return from a lower back injury in time to feature against City. Defender Giovanni Leoni will most likely need to wait until November to play for Liverpool again, as he continues his rehabilitation from a horrific ACL injury.

Meanwhile, forward Hugo Ekitike will be targeting a late November comeback, having been ruled out of action since April with a Achilles tendon injury that saw him miss the end of Liverpool’s season and all of France’s 2026 World Cup campaign. It’s the same case for right-back Conor Bradley, who has been sidelined with a serious knee injury since January.

How are other Liverpool stars faring on the international break?

A total of 23 Liverpool players have been involved with their senior national team setups during the international break. Gakpo, who scored the equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Germany, was joined on Netherlands duty by Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Jeremie Frimpong. The latter was left out of the squad for the 2-1 win away to Serbia.

Elsewhere, Jeremy Jacquet earned his first France cap as he started for Les Bleus and helped them keep a clean sheet in their 1-0 win away to Belgium. £123m mega summer signing Bradley Barcola made a brief appearance in the previous 1-0 win over Turkey and started against Belgium, but struggled to make an impact in either match.

Uruguay’s Ronald Araujo’s substitution against Japan saw the South American side collapse to a 3-1 loss at the Miyagi Stadium, but things improved with a subsequent 4-1 win away to South Korea. Left-back Kostas Tsimikas helped Greece earn a stunning 1-0 win over Jurgen Klopp’s Germany, while had Florian Wirtz a largely uneventful cameo in the same match.

Other notable moments so far for Liverpool players during the international break include Reds backup goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili helping Georgia notch up an impressive goalless draw with Ukraine, and Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai duo Milos Kerkez being involved in 1-0 loss to Ukraine and a frustrating 0-0 draw away in Northern Ireland.
