Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk again linked with a move to AC Milan, as per latest transfer news.
Journalist doubles down on Milan’s dream of signing Virgil van Dijk
Italian reporter Carlo Pellegatti has once again fanned the flames around a possible Van Dijk switch to San Siro. He refuses to back down from his claims. Speaking through Football Italia, Pellegatti insisted that the whispers linking the Dutch defender with Milan are not just idle gossip pulled from nowhere. He pointed to the past to defend his credibility, reminding critics that he faced similar mockery before Zlatan Ibrahimovic eventually completed his own move to the club.
According to Pellegatti, Milan owner Gerry Cardinale has made his stance perfectly clear behind the scenes. “I continue to say that Gerry Cardinale made clear, either we get him now by paying or next year for free,” Pellegatti stated, leaving little room for doubt about the club’s intentions. He added, “I said that Van Dijk will arrive at Milan sooner or later.”
Van Dijk’s current Liverpool deal runs until June 2027. This gives the Serie A giants a clear window to make their move official, either through a January approach or a patient wait for a free transfer. Real Madrid have also been mentioned as admirers, with Jose Mourinho pushing for a deal, though question marks remain over investing heavily in a 35-year-old defender.
Van Dijk remains key to Liverpool’s defense
Despite all the links from Italy, Van Dijk has lost none of his importance at Anfield. The Dutchman has built a strong understanding with summer arrival Jeremy Jacquet. The partnership has started to look like exactly what Andoni Iraola needed.
The Reds’ captain has made over 330 Premier League appearances since his £75 million move from Southampton in January 2018. That was a transfer that completely changed the club’s fortunes at the back. Liverpool have also lined up Tottenham captain Micky van de Ven as a potential long term successor. Although this looks like planning for the future rather than an immediate replacement plan.
Virgil van Dijk’s 2026/27 stats at Liverpool so far, as per FOTMOB:

Champions League 1 0 67% 40% 6
Van Dijk’s Liverpool legacy already secure
Van Dijk has already cemented his place among the finest defenders that the Premier League has ever seen. He quickly transformed a leaky Liverpool backline into one of the most feared defensive units in European football, helping the Reds lift the Champions League and the Premier League title within his first few seasons at the club.
A move away to AC Milan, should it eventually happen, would be a final chapter for a player who has given everything to the Liverpool cause. Pellegatti’s claims remain just rumours at the moment. The Merseyside club have given no sign that they are ready to let their captain leave as well.
Van Dijk himself has recently pushed back publicly against unrelated criticism from Dutch media regarding his influence over the national team setup. This shows he still has plenty of fire left in him both on and off the pitch.
