BBC confirm Liverpool tried and failed to sign Arsenal attacker in summer window

Liverpool will return to Premier League action on Sunday, October 11, when Manchester City visit Anfield following a three-week international break.

Andoni Iraola’s side entered the break sixth in the table with nine points and remain unbeaten in all competitions this season. Alexander Isak scored the only goal in their 1-0 victory over Bournemouth before the international break.

Liverpool face a busy schedule after the break, beginning with a Champions League trip to LASK on October 14 and an away game against Brentford three days later.

They then host Villarreal on October 20 and Brighton on October 25 before welcoming Chelsea to Anfield in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, October 28.

Arsenal will then visit Anfield on Sunday, November 1, with the Premier League clash coming after the Gunners recently beat Liverpool to the signing of a highly rated Georgian youngster.

Arsenal announced earlier this month that they had reached a pre-contract agreement to sign Georgian forward Andria Bartishvili, with the move scheduled for July 2027.

Liverpool had also been credited with an interest in the 17-year-old, who can play as a winger or attacking midfielder.

Arsenal academy confirmed the agreement on September 11, with the deal still subject to the relevant regulatory processes. Bartishvili will turn 18 before moving to north London.

Reports linking Liverpool with the youngster first emerged in June, with Arsenal and Paris FC also working on a deal.

BBC journalist Sami Mokbel later reported that Liverpool and Juventus were among the clubs interested in Bartishvili, while Arsenal’s Maurizio Micheli was leading the Gunners’ pursuit.

Mokbel has now confirmed that Liverpool attempted to sign Bartishvili but were beaten by Arsenal in the race for his signature.

Micheli had watched the youngster in action for Iberia 1999 against Flora in a Champions League qualifier before Arsenal moved to secure an agreement.

Andria Bartishvili is currently on loan at Iberia 1999 from second-division club Kolkheti 1913. He has scored twice in the Georgian top flight since joining the club in January.

The teenager came through the Dinamo Tbilisi academy, which also produced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and gave the Napoli and Georgia star his professional debut. Bartishvili has been compared with Kvaratskhelia because of his playing style and position.

Georgian football follows a calendar-year season, meaning Bartishvili’s current loan spell runs until December. He will turn 18 in March 2027 before joining Arsenal in July.
