MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, September 29, 1957, the greatest team to ever play the game did just that - the Green Bay Packers played their first game at City Stadium, which would eventually become Lambeau Field.
For that first game, they played their biggest rivals, the Chicago Bears.
The Packers won the game 21 - 17.
Then Vice President Richard Nixon was at the game, in the stadium that held just over 32,000 people.
Today, the stadium has a capacity of over 81,000.
City Stadium was renamed to Lambeau Field in 1965, after the team’s founder, player and longtime coach Earl “Curly” Lambeau.
The stadium has been home to the Packers for six of their 13 championships, and was even named a Wonder of Wisconsin back in September of last year.
