As we head into Week 4, the trade talks involving Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and several interested teams have begun to heat up. The New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and Detroit Lions appear to be the three teams in the running for the rising star cornerback.

Under the radar stat from the game
I watched the game on my phone at an airport bar and on a plane. It wasn’t as focused of a viewing as usual, and the audio was mostly lost in a sea of background noise.
After the first two Bengal drives I thought that Graham was likely using a two high safety look to limit downfield chunk plays while allowing the underneath stuff to happen and a goal of punishing anyone who caught the football. Bengal TEs, WR3, and Chase Brown all seemed to be the recipients of some good hard hits underneath. Pretty sure WR3 Dohnte Meyers had a pure drop over the middle as he was bracing for impact.
What we did not see yesterday was any Bengal piling on yards after the catch. Steelers were letting them have the underneath stuff and surrounding them so that it didn’t turn into anything bigger. The rare day of good tackling after the catch.
Joe Burrow has a career average if 5.1 yards after the catch, but yesterday it was 2.8– the second lowest of his career. Burrow’s success is based on vision, timing, and accurately delivering the ball to the playmakers. Yesterday the Steelers largely kept them from making any YAC of significance and kept the dinks and dunks from turning into big chunks.
I’ve seen comments on hear lamenting the “inability” to cover over the middle, but I don’t think tight coverage over the middle was a priority. Surround and Pound was the strategy and it worked. Who knows if they ever play for the Steelers again, but going up against Burrow, Chase, and Higgins without DeShon Elliot and Joey Porter Jr wasn’t a fair fight on paper. Benching Asante Samuel Jr for ineffectiveness meant going even deeper into what should be the bench.
