This could be the week NFL fans “get some clarity on Tony Romo’s future at CBS,” according to Underscore Media’s Jimmy Traina. The network has yet to announce what games its broadcast teams will be at for Week 4, but Traina assumes that the top team led by Jim Nantz will be at the national Broncos-49ers game. Traina said when CBS does release the broadcaster assignments, if Nantz and current partner J.J. Watt are at Broncos-49ers, “you can start to think that Tony is going to be done at CBS.” Meanwhile, he believes Nantz and Watt “had their best game” together during the Ravens-Cowboys thriller last week in Rio. That was “as excited as I’ve ever heard Jim Nantz calling a game.” Both Nantz and Watt “got more and more into it” as it went on. Traina: “It was their best chemistry day. They gave you a real feel of the excitement for that game” (“Traina Thoughts,” 9/28).
A PERFECT MATCH? In Houston, Eddie Maisonet wrote Nantz and Watt “delivered electric moments on the mic that matched the game and the atmosphere inside the stadium” in Rio. Maisonet: “The real-time chemistry experiment between Nantz and Watt will continue, as no plans for Romo returning to the booth appear to be in sight” (CHRON.com, 9/28). In Fort Worth, Mac Engel wrote the more Watt works, the “more it looks like Romo’s time with CBS is over.” The longer this Romo hiatus goes, it “does not sound like he will return to the network.” Engel wrote Watt is a “charismatic guy who works well next to Nantz, a broadcaster so smooth and talented he can make most pictures look good” (FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 9/28).
