Everton news & talking points: Pickford, Mykolenko, Dewsbury-Hall & internationals

Jordan Pickford’s future has provided the main transfer talking point on a busy Tuesday morning for Everton, with Bayern Munich reportedly considering the England goalkeeper as part of their long-term planning.

There has also been fresh evidence of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s work without the ball, another look at Vitalii Mykolenko’s strong start to the season and an injury setback for former Blue Tim Iroegbunam.

International football takes over for the rest of today, with six Everton players potentially involved.

Bayern Munich consider Pickford

Bayern Munich have reportedly added Pickford to their list of potential successors to Manuel Neuer. According to journalist Alan Nixon, Vincent Kompany’s side are gathering information on the 32-year-old, who is said to be ahead of Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen among the options being considered.

As we reported in our look at Bayern Munich’s interest in Pickford, there is no suggestion Everton are looking to sell or that their goalkeeper is seeking a move. Neuer is under contract until 2027, while Pickford’s Everton deal runs until 2029. For now, it is one to watch rather than any indication that a move is close.

The speculation also comes after former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson questioned Thomas Tuchel’s decision to leave Pickford out against Spain, saying the Everton goalkeeper hadn’t put a foot wrong for his country.

Mykolenko answering Everton’s left-back questions

Mykolenko’s performances have given us reason to revisit one of the questions hanging over the squad during the summer. There were plenty of calls for Everton to strengthen at left-back, particularly after Adam Aznou left on loan. Mykolenko’s start to the campaign has gone some way towards quietening those concerns.

As we looked at in our assessment of Mykolenko’s impressive start, he has looked fitter and stronger defensively, while his one-on-one work has been particularly good. The lack of experienced cover remains a concern, especially after the minor leg problem that kept him out of Ukraine’s draw with Georgia last night. Mykolenko’s own performances, though, have been one of the quieter positives of Everton’s unbeaten start.

Dewsbury-Hall leads pressure data

A new statistic has underlined the amount of work Dewsbury-Hall is getting through in David Moyes’ midfield. According to Gradient Sports, no Premier League player has registered more total pressures this season than Dewsbury-Hall’s 330.

Definitions of a pressure vary between data providers, so the figure shouldn’t be compared directly with numbers from different datasets. Within Gradient’s figures, however, Dewsbury-Hall sits top of the Premier League. It fits what Everton supporters have been watching. Much of his work comes away from the ball, closing defenders, removing passing options and forcing opponents into quicker decisions.

Iroegbunam could miss Everton return

Former Everton midfielder Tim Iroegbunam could be denied an early reunion with his old club after suffering an injury setback with Hull City. The 23-year-old aggravated a groin problem against Newcastle and is now a major doubt for Hull’s meeting with Everton at the Hill Dickinson next month.

Iroegbunam left during the summer after two seasons with the Blues. Injuries interrupted his progress on Merseyside, but he had useful spells in the side and left without any fuss after increased competition reduced his opportunities.

Six Everton players could feature today

Attention now turns towards international football. Harrison Armstrong is with England Under-20s for their game against France this morning, while academy players Kai Hutchison and Luis Gardner could feature for Scotland Under-17s and Wales Under-19s respectively.

The main Everton interest comes tonight. Pickford, Jarrad Branthwaite and James Garner are all in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the Nations League game away to Czechia at 7.45pm.

Pickford is still waiting for his first minutes of the break after James Trafford started against Spain, while Garner and Branthwaite both came off the bench at Wembley. Their appearances and minutes will also feed into our Everton international duty tracker as the break continues.
