Giorgio Scalvini has extended his stay at Atalanta with a new agreement. The Serie A side have now tied him down until 2031. Chelsea, though, are still watching the young Italian defender very closely, as per the latest transfer news.
Giorgio Scalvini Commits Long-Term Future To Atalanta
Atalanta have rewarded the defender with new terms. At just 22, he has already come through a serious knee injury in 2024. Shoulder surgery followed, and he played only eight games that campaign. Last season he was back to full strength and played roughly 30 games. He also scored three goals in Serie A. He has now played over 100 games for the club. As reported by CaughtOffside, the new deal has not cooled the interest from the Blues. Several other Premier League sides also still follow Giorgio Scalvini closely.
Atalanta look set to build their team around him for years. Securing him until 2031 also gives them far more power in transfer talks. Until now, his deal ran out in 2028. Now any club that wants him must deal with a much longer contract. Overall, this eases the pressure Atalanta may have felt this summer.
Even so, a new contract does not always stop a transfer. Leading clubs often move for players in strong form, no matter how long their deal runs. His calm style on the ball still draws attention across Europe. His abilities as a defender also adds to that appeal. He has won senior caps for Italy as well, which further lifts his standing.

Chelsea Continue To Track Progress Of Giorgio Scalvini
Chelsea have tracked Giorgio Scalvini for well over a year. Their interest first surfaced in the summer of 2025. One report says the Blues sent a direct enquiry to his agents. Atalanta have valued him at around £42m. Chelsea also have ties with Atalanta after they signed defender Marco Palestra for close to £49m. That link could help if serious talks ever begin.
Both Manchester clubs have also kept watch on him across multiple recent seasons. Tottenham have also asked about him in the past. Newcastle United have pushed hardest for him over time. Yet Atalanta blocked their latest approach this summer and held firm. That stance shows how highly the club rate their own defender.
Xabi Alonso is still shaping his Chelsea squad. A young defender of this quality would also fit well. Several of the current centre-back options face unclear futures at the club. Nothing suggests a transfer is close at present. However, the number of enquiries points to real interest, not just rumour.

What Comes Next In The Transfer Saga
With fresh terms signed, a transfer this year now looks unlikely. Atalanta will not want to lose a key youth product in the middle of a busy season. Their recent deals show a club willing to sell for the right price. Still, that usually happens later in a season, once a proper replacement is ready.
Premier League clubs, Chelsea included, often plan years ahead for defensive targets. Scouting now does not mean a bid is close. Newcastle’s pursuit, which stretches back to 2025, shows how slowly these football deals can develop.
For now, the picture is clear. Giorgio Scalvini has secured his future in Italy, at least on paper. His admirers in England must stay patient. The next real chance arrives once the January window opens. Atalanta’s resistance may still weaken by then.
