Goalkeepers sold cheaply have a habit of looking expensive later. Clubs move on. The player keeps playing.
A veteran who is still first choice at 34 is a different market to a number two. Big clubs notice when the man in front of them is running out of years.
German papers linking a Premier League keeper to Munich is not a contract. It is a reminder of a fee that already looks small.

Bild has reported Bayern Munich interest in Bernd Leno. Arsenal sold him to Fulham for £8million in 2022 after Aaron Ramsdale’s arrival ended his time as first choice.
Leno has been a regular at Craven Cottage since. He produced a man-of-the-match display against Manchester United in his latest outing and that supporters still sing his name. He is 34.
Manuel Neuer is nearer the end of his Bayern career. That is the opening Bild’s report implies, not a signed deal. No fee, no contact confirmed by either club, and no quote from the player.

The comparison drawn is Edwin van der Sar, who left Fulham for Manchester United at 35 in 2005 and then won the lot. That is a high bar. It is also why a settled Premier League keeper still attracts a glance from Germany.
Leno made 125 appearances for Arsenal after joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2018. He was first choice through the Emery years and the start of Arteta’s rebuild, then lost the shirt when Raya arrived on loan in 2023. The sale recouped a modest fee and cleared a wage. Raya has since become the undisputed number one and has already been nominated twice in a month for Premier League Save of the Month this season.
Former Arsenal keepers have had second lives. Emi Martinez left and became a World Cup winner. Neto, another spare pair of gloves from the 2024-25 squad, agreed a return to Juventus this week. Leno’s version would be a Bundesliga swansong rather than a reunion.
For Arsenal the story is closed business that still generates headlines. An £8million outgoing in 2022 would look different if Bayern pay several times that. Until the interest becomes a bid, he remains Fulham’s goalkeeper. The interest only underlines how quickly a number one can become an £8million line in the accounts.
