Chelsea remain open to signing a midfielder in January, but the progress of Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and Reggie Watson could influence their approach.
BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella outlined the position in his latest Chelsea Q&A, carried by Yahoo Sports.
“I can tell you with some degree of certainty that Chelsea are open to signing a midfielder in January,” he wrote.
Kinsella identified midfield stability following Moises Caicedo’s return and the readiness of the two 16-year-olds as factors that could change that position.
The report describes an option Chelsea are considering, rather than a confirmed decision to buy.
Chelsea January transfer plans include academy assessment
Both teenagers have already taken significant steps towards Xabi Alonso’s first team.
Nicoll-Jazuli became Chelsea’s youngest Premier League player when he appeared against Brentford earlier this month.
Watson made his competitive debut against Leeds in the Carabao Cup.
Those appearances give Chelsea something concrete to assess. However, occasional senior minutes and reliable Premier League cover represent different stages of development.
Neither player’s involvement guarantees that Chelsea can meet their midfield needs internally.
Summer departures explain the January question
Chelsea’s options changed substantially when Enzo Fernandez joined Manchester City and Dario Essugo moved to Strasbourg on loan.
The collapse of the proposed Lamine Camara transfer left Alonso without an expected addition.
That makes the coming months important for recruitment planning as well as results.
Chelsea need to establish whether their available midfielders can provide consistent control and dependable cover. The academy pair can strengthen their own cases during that assessment, while a January signing remains a possibility.
