TalkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy has backed Arsenal forward Kai Havertz as a “dark horse” for the Premier League Golden Boot this season.

Speaking to Metro, Murphy labelled Chelsea’s Joao Pedro as the “main threat” to Man City’s Erling Haaland, but he also believes the Gunners’ no.29 could be in with a shout:

“The other dark horse, if he stays fit, might be Havertz, not necessarily to catch Haaland, but to be in the top three or four, because Havertz is a calm finisher.”

“If he stays fit Arsenal are going to get him chances, plus he’s brilliant in the air. I think he could be up there pushing behind Haaland, because if Arsenal keep dominating and winning games like they do, and he looks fit, he’s going to score loads of goals.”

Havertz will have his work cut out matching Haaland

The German has scored 2 goals in his first 5 Premier League games, which is a decent return, but he is already 3 behind the league’s top scorer.

Haaland has found the back of the net 5 times, which puts him in the lead ahead of Liverpool’s Alexander Isak (4) and Pedro (3) in the race for the Golden Boot. The Norwegian international has already won the accolade three times, and he would match the record jointly held by Alan Shearer and Mo Salah if he finishes top of the scoring charts once again.

Arsenal have to keep Havertz fit

The 27-year-old sustained a hamstring injury whilst on international duty with Germany and he is now a doubt for the Gunners next fixture against Leeds.

Havertz spent a considerable amount of time on the sidelines last season too, and manager Mikel Arteta will be keeping his fingers crossed that his latest setback is only minor. If he continues to pick up issues, though, any hopes of a Golden Boot will quickly fade.
