Everton linked with Bundesliga striker as£50m January transfer claim emerges

Everton are reportedly keeping tabs on Eintracht Frankfurt striker Younes Ebnoutalib as attention begins to turn towards what David Moyes might do when the January transfer window opens.

The 23-year-old has made a flying start to the Bundesliga season, scoring four goals and providing one assist in his first four appearances. Everton are reported to have watched him closely, although Tottenham and Brighton are also credited with an interest.

The link arrives at an interesting time, with former Manchester City financial adviser (hhmm) Stefan Borson suggesting The Friedkin Group could have reason to invest heavily in January if Everton remain in contention for European football.

Everton linked with Younes Ebnoutalib

Ebnoutalib only joined Eintracht Frankfurt from Elversberg in January and is contracted to the German club until 2031.

His first months at Frankfurt were disrupted by a knee ligament injury, but he has made up for lost time this season. The striker opened the Bundesliga campaign with a hat-trick against Union Berlin and has since taken his tally to four goals and one assist from four league appearances.

According to TEAMtalk, Everton and Brighton have watched Ebnoutalib closely, with Tottenham now also monitoring his progress.

His form has also brought international recognition. Germany manager Jürgen Klopp handed Ebnoutalib his senior debut against the Netherlands this month before starting him against Greece three days later.

The Bundesliga’s profile of Ebnoutalib highlights the close control developed during his street-football upbringing, while his record at Elversberg suggests his current scoring run hasn’t appeared from nowhere. He scored 12 league goals for the club before Frankfurt moved for him.

Whether Everton’s interest develops into anything more substantial remains to be seen. Frankfurt have Ebnoutalib tied to a long-term contract and there is no suggestion at this stage that an offer has been made.

Could Everton spend £50m in January?

The transfer link comes amid separate discussion over how much backing Moyes might receive during the winter window.

Borson, speaking to Football Insider, raised the possibility of TFG deciding to invest heavily if Everton reach January with European qualification within sight.

He used £50m as an example of the sort of investment the owners might consider in those circumstances rather than reporting that the money has already been made available.

“Is there an appetite for them to say, ‘Right, we’ll put £50m in January’? Unless they’re on the brink of something…” Borson said.

“Unless they’re having a fantastic season, let’s say, they somehow find themselves in the top four, then maybe it’s worth investing.”

He argues that qualification for Europe could increase Everton’s value at a time when TFG are exploring outside investment in the club.

From a football perspective, another forward would make sense if Moyes decides he needs greater depth in January. Thierno Barry has made an encouraging start to the season, but Everton’s options remain limited following a summer in which the manager repeatedly spoke about the need to strengthen his squad.

Ebnoutalib remains firmly in the transfer-rumour category and competition for him could be significant if his Bundesliga form continues.

Four goals in four league appearances, a first Germany cap and reported attention from Premier League clubs have nevertheless made him a name worth watching ahead of January.
