Liverpool may have missed out on Marc Guehi in the past, but they have now been backed to “take advantage” of Manchester City’s situation and sign him.

It has been a huge few days in the football world, with the Premier League finding City guilty of all their financial charges, and chief executive Richard Masters saying:

“The core decision establishes the facts of what happened at Manchester City during this period. It details how the club systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade.

“It also vindicates the Premier League’s decision to pursue this case against Manchester City. While the process to date has been both long and difficult, the League has remained determined that the facts be established independently.

“It is a key responsibility of the Premier League to ensure that the Rules, approved by the clubs themselves, are upheld to protect the integrity of the competition. It is paramount that the League remains competitive and fair for all clubs and for the fans. We take that role extremely seriously.”

City pipped Liverpool to the signing of Guehi back in January, acting as a blow, but speaking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown said the Reds could now look to bring him in, taking advantage of their rivals’ situation in the process:

“If Man City are hit with immediate relegation, it’s going to be hard to keep players around. Ultimately, they want to be playing at the top level, in the Premier League, in the Champions League, so dropping into the second, third or fourth tier isn’t going to match those demands.

“If that happens, they are at serious risk of losing key players, when you look at the likes of Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki, Ruben Dias and all of the others. Marc Guehi for example, if Man City are relegated, there is every chance Liverpool could look to take advantage of that situation and that move could be back on.

“They were disappointed to miss out on him before, they think very highly of him there so if they had the opportunity to finally bring him in, of course they’ll be looking at it. There will be clubs across England and Europe on alert now, keeping an eye on the situation and looking to take advantage if that is a possibility.”

Should Liverpool still look to sign Marc Guehi?

Guehi is a fantastic player who has already been a strong addition for City, so Liverpool signing him would be a shrewd decision if he ends up looking for a way out of the Etihad.

The former Crystal Palace captain is now a regular starter for England, with Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel speaking positively about him last year:

“He looks very impressive on the field. He has a couple of very impressive weeks behind him on the sporting side and the performance side. He is the main driver of Crystal Palace’s success. He is the captain and the leader.”

Virgil van Dijk is now in the final of his Liverpool contract and is yet to sign an extension, and Guehi stands out as a great option to come in if the Dutchman leaves next summer.

Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are superb young players for the Reds, but having a more experienced head alongside them is a must, and Guehi ticks all the boxes, possessing Premier League experience, a good reading of the game, quality on the ball and leadership.
