The Key Match Incidents panel were left split over the decision to rule out Thierno Barry's goal against Ipswich Town. Brennan Johnson was judged to be offside by VAR after referee Stuart Attwell had initially awarded the goal.
The panel believes that VAR came to the correct decision, but only by the narrowest of margins, as it came to a 3-2 split over the decision.
Barry thought he had headed Everton further ahead midway through the second half against the Tractor Boys before Attwell was advised by VAR that Johnson was offside in front of Christian Walton. That is despite the pair being in the opposite half of the goal to where the ball went in.
Ultimately, the KMI panel decided that Johnson was interfering with play, and it was a clear and obvious error.
The Premier League released the panel's findings: "The VAR intervention to disallow the goal for interfering with an opponent by Johnson was supported, 3:2. Johnson was clearly in an offside position, in very close proximity to the goalkeeper and makes a movement, impacting the goalkeeper’s ability to set and move to the ball.
"Two panellists felt that Johnson’s position and actions did not impact goalkeeper Walton.""
Following the game, Toffees defender James Tarkowski pleaded for referees to be allowed to use common sense in such judgments.

“My opinion is that they probably should be allowed common sense from the referee to say he is obviously getting nowhere near it," he said. “But the law doesn't allow them to do that, so he has got his hands tied behind his back a little bit there.
“The refs are intelligent people and they should be allowed to decide whether they think the goalkeeper has got a chance of saving it or not, but it is what it is.”

Everton still came away 1-0 winners against Ipswich. The Blues overcame their opponents thanks to Barry's opening goal after 11 minutes and earned their second win of the season with a clean sheet.
Barry has now bagged five goals this season in just seven appearances. Only two have come in the Premier League, however, with his first arriving in the win over Crystal Palace.
