English media reacts to Rio Ngumoha’s performance vs Czech Republic

England secured their first points of the Nations League campaign with a 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic in Prague, with goals from Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane sealing a win that ended a 118-year wait for a competitive victory in the Czech capital.

The result followed a difficult first half, briefly enlivened by Pavel Sulc’s red card for a foul on Elliot Anderson, before Thomas Tuchel’s side settled after the break.

Among the England players handed minutes off the bench was 17-year-old Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha, who came on in the 71st minute for Bukayo Saka.

The teenager, continuing his rapid rise through England’s senior setup, offered another glimpse of the directness and confidence that has already made him one of the most talked-about young players in the country, and both major English outlets took note of his cameo.

The Evening Standard’s Dom Smith gave Ngumoha a 6 out of 10, writing simply, “Bright when he came on and tried to make things happen down the right.”

“Tuchel clearly likes him.”

The comment reflects a growing sense that Ngumoha has quickly earned the trust of the England head coach despite his tender age, with his involvement in recent squads increasingly framed as a deliberate rather than incidental selection.

The BBC’s Alex Howell offered a similarly positive if more understated assessment, also scoring the winger 6 out of 10.

Howell’s write-up was brief but pointed, “His first thought was to go forward.”

It is a short line, but one that speaks directly to the fearless, attacking instinct that has defined Ngumoha’s breakthrough season at both club and international level, an approach that clearly continues to catch the eye of English pundits and reporters even in a substitute role.

The wider player ratings from both outlets told the story of a professional if unspectacular England performance.

Anthony Gordon was the standout performer across both publications, earning an 8 from the Evening Standard and an 8 from the BBC, with the latter also naming him Player of the Match, backed by a strong average fan rating of 8.13.

Harry Kane picked up his 87th international goal, earning a 7 from both outlets, while Trent Alexander-Arnold’s assist for the opener drew praise despite a relatively quiet defensive workload.

For Ngumoha specifically, the consistent 6/10 scores from both major outlets, alongside the pointed observations about his directness and Tuchel’s evident faith in him, continue to build the picture of a player whose ceiling English football is only beginning to properly appreciate.

At just 18, cameo appearances that generate this level of individual media attention represent a considerable marker of how highly he is now regarded within the senior set-up.

England’s next Nations League fixture will offer Ngumoha another opportunity to build on the growing reputation both major English outlets are increasingly keen to document.
