Everton could again listen to offers for Jake O’Brien in January if the Republic of Ireland defender remains on the fringes of David Moyes’s side.
The 25-year-old was linked with a move away from the Hill Dickinson during the closing stages of the summer window, when Everton were reported to be prepared to consider offers. No move materialised and O’Brien remained with the club, but his involvement in the Premier League has since been limited.
Jake O’Brien January exit claim emerges
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has now told Football Insider that he expects Everton to listen again if offers arrive in January.
“When the January window opens, they’re going to listen to new offers,” Brown said, adding that O’Brien could be allowed to leave if the right proposal arrives.
That should be treated as Brown’s assessment rather than confirmation of Everton’s January plans. There is, however, previous reporting behind the suggestion. Everton were expected to listen to offers for O’Brien towards the end of the summer window, with interest from clubs in England and elsewhere in Europe.
We reported at the time that Everton would need to consider their defensive options before allowing him to leave. O’Brien has subsequently managed only 15 Premier League minutes this season, according to Opta, although he has also played in the Carabao Cup.
His situation between now and January will therefore be worth watching, particularly if regular opportunities at centre-back remain limited. For now, there is no indication that Everton have received a new offer or made a decision to sell.
