Dan Friedkin has welcomed a major step forward for Roma’s proposed new stadium as his family’s work in Italy continues alongside its ownership of Everton.
The Pietralata project has received final approval from the Conferenza dei Servizi, allowing Roma to move towards the next stage of a scheme expected to involve investment of more than €1bn.
Friedkin was in Copenhagen for the European Club Assembly when news of the approval emerged, describing it as a “great moment” for Roma.
Friedkin’s Roma stadium plans move forward
According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma can now prepare the detailed executive project while the process concerning the Pietralata site continues.
Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri said the aim is to begin construction in March 2027, with the work expected to take around two and a half years. That could put completion towards the end of 2029. The development will inevitably be of interest to Everton supporters because of the Friedkin family’s ownership of both clubs.
David Moyes revealed earlier this month that he had not met or spoken directly to Dan Friedkin since returning to Everton in January 2025. Moyes explained that chief executive Angus Kinnear is his main point of contact, followed by Friedkin Group representative Rishi Majithia.
That doesn’t mean Friedkin is responsible for Everton’s day-to-day operation. It does, however, underline the different management structures in place across the Friedkin family’s football interests.
The Roma project has now reached a significant stage after years of planning, with the club describing the approval as the beginning of a new phase. For Everton, meanwhile, questions over the club’s ownership structure have remained prominent following a difficult end to the summer transfer window.
Our earlier report looked at the wider investment picture, while concerns surrounding Everton’s ownership and Moyes have also been raised in recent weeks.
Full details of Friedkin’s comments and the latest Roma development can be found in the Liverpool Echo’s report.
