Mbappe opens up on his decision to reject Liverpool

Mbappe is aiming to make Real Madrid the La Liga champions again. However, not many know that the French star was once all set to join the Reds a decade ago. As reported by BBC, Mbappe revealed that his mother was a huge Liverpool fan, and she wanted him to join the Premier League club.

In fact, when he turned 18 in 2016, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also approached him with a lucrative offer at the same time. However, Mbappe eventually refused to join the English side. He stated, ***“I didn’t listen because I wanted to play in my city, Paris. I didn’t want to leave my country before I was someone.***“

Mbappe was already part of the French club Monaco since 2015. After refusing the Liverpool offer, he was loaned out to Paris Saint-Germain in the 2017-18 season. However, he impressed the management so much that they signed a long term contract with him. Mbappe played for PSG between 2018 and 2024. Subsequently, he took a transfer to Real Madrid in 2024. He joined the Spanish club through a free agent transfer.

Mbappe’s stats for the 2025-26 season at Real Madrid, as per FOTMOB:

Competitions Matches Goals Assists

La Liga 31 25 5

Copa del Rey 1 2 0

UEFA Champions League 11 15 1

FIFA Club World Cup 3 0 1

Mbappe’s future with Real Madrid

Despite some rumors about his future with Los Blancos, Mbappe is in no mood for a transfer anytime soon. He will stay at Real Madrid until his contract expires. The 27-year-old forward has signed a long term contract with the Spanish club till June 2029. Real Madrid have not won the La Liga title since the 2023-24 season and Mbappe wants to change that situation.

The road ahead for Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe has nothing much to worry about in terms of disciplinary issues. However, he is working on his fitness concerns. He sustained several minor injuries throughout the 2025-26 season. He also suffered from a minor right ankle injury during the quarter-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However he recovered in no time. If Mbappe needs to make a huge impact in world football, he just needs to be consistent in his form.

Mbappe was part of the French squad which won the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He was also part of the French squad that finished runners-up in the 2022 edition. However, in 2026, Les Bleus couldn’t make it to the finals. They lost to England in the third-place playoff 6-4.

However, Mbappe’s individual performance didn’t go unnoticed. He was awarded the Golden Boot for scoring 10 goals in the 2026 edition, one of the best performances from a French player since Just Fontaine. Fontaine scored 13 goals in the 1958 edition, the highest by any Golden Boot winner in any edition of the FIFA World Cup. Mbappe will stay at Los Blancos until 2029. However, the doors for Anfield aren’t permanently closed for him. If the Reds come up with a suitable offer, he can move to Anfield soon. It remains to be seen if he is equally interested to join Liverpool by 2029 or not.
