Liverpool are the “leading contenders” to snap up Defensor Sporting winger Nicolas Scotti, according to reports.

TEAMtalk claim that the Reds are the team most likely to make a move for the Uruguayan Under-18 international, who has an $8m (£6m) release clause in his contract.

Scotti is capable of playing on both flanks, and possesses a decent amount of pace and strong technical ability.

The 16-year-old has recently broken into Defensor Sporting’s first team, having made his senior debut against Wanderers last month.

Scotti does have several other suitors

While Liverpool have shown the most interest, TEAMtalk report that both Arsenal and Manchester United have also been keeping tabs on the teenager.

Brazilian clubs Sao Paulo and Atletico Mineiro have already made enquiries, while Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are maintaining a watching brief.

Liverpool would have to wait until 2028 to sign him

UK visa rules and FIFA regulations mean that the Merseyside club cannot buy Scotti immediately as he has not turned 18.

The forward‘s 17th birthday is in November, and that means an official transfer could only be sanctioned in January 2028 at the very earliest.

There are other avenues that can be explored. A pre-contract agreement could be reached with Defensor Sporting, but in that scenario, the Uruguayan club would probably hold out for more than his current buyout fee.

A lot will hinge on whether new sporting director Julian Ward and the scouts involved believe Scotti is worth pushing the boat out for to ensure he doesn’t fall into the clutches of a rival club.
