Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini has offered encouragement to Newcastle United by confirming he would “like” to “go abroad” before the end of his career.

The Italian international has recently signed a new contract keeping him in Bergamo until 2031, but speaking to reporters about his future, he admitted that a move to another league would tempt him:

“I’ve always been there [at Atalanta], and I’ve extended because I’ve always felt good [here]… At the same time, I understand those who change clubs and go abroad.”

“One day I’d like to do that to learn new things and new concepts, but I’m already doing it at Atalanta.”

Newcastle United have a longstanding interest

The Magpies have kept tabs on the 22-year-old for several years, and recent reports have confirmed that they are “still very keen” on the player.

With both Fabian Schar and Dan Burn turning 35 before the end of the season, there is an expectation that a younger centre-half will be brought in sooner rather than later.

Considering how long Scalvini has been on the club’s radar, it would not be a surprise if a bid is lodged for the defender next summer.

There will be competition for Scalvini

The Italian is one of the most highly rated young players in Europe, so sporting director Ross Wilson may have his work cut out in securing his signature.

Chelsea are likely to be Newcastle’s main rivals in the battle for Scalvini, and they are on good terms with his club, having signed Marco Palestra in June, as well as reaching an agreement to snap up Honest Ahanor next year.
