Arsenal had official£55million bid rejected for former Liverpool star last summer

A centre-back who can also play right-back is how clubs cover two problems with one cheque. The selling club still has to want to cash it.

Summer bids that never become signings look different once a replacement is already through the door. The number still tells you how high the interest went.

Buy-back clauses hanging over 2027 keep the original club in the story whether they bid or not.

Bild reports Arsenal offered Bayer Leverkusen €65million (£55.5million) for Jarell Quansah in the summer and were turned down. Leverkusen did not intend to sell.

Quansah left Liverpool for £35million in July 2025 after 58 appearances for the Reds. He has since made 50 appearances in Germany. Liverpool hold a €70million (£60million) buy-back that becomes active in summer 2027.

Arsenal and Manchester United were both linked on 14 August. Chelsea have enquired. Real Madrid are tracking him with a possible move at the end of the season, according to the same report.

Arsenal signed Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £55million instead. Konsa can play centre-back or right-back, the same mix Quansah offers. He has already been used by England this break, then left unused in Prague after Thomas Tuchel cited “minor issues”.

William Saliba is working towards a late October return from a back problem. Ben White, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapie and Jurrien Timber have all needed managing. That is the defensive context in which a €65million bid makes sense even if it failed.

Liverpool’s own picture has shifted. Ronald Araujo is on a season-long loan and Football365 suggests the Reds are more likely to trigger a €55million option on the Uruguayan than spend €70million bringing Quansah home.

For Arsenal the file is not dead. It is parked. A rejected bid does not stop 2027 conversations if Leverkusen’s price comes down or if Liverpool decline to use the clause. It does mean the immediate answer was Konsa, not a fight with Bayer through August.

Quansah stays in the Bundesliga. Arsenal stay with the defender they did get. The €65million figure is the residue: proof they were serious, and proof Leverkusen were not selling.
