Germany officially hand Arsenal winger first senior call-up

Germany

A first senior cap is how a move abroad gets measured. Coaches watch pre-season and the opening league games. Then they write the name down.

Friendlies against strong sides are where young wide players find out if club form travels. The shirt is new. The standard is not.

Nineteen is young enough to play freely. It is also old enough to be judged.

Christian Wück has named Lisa Baum in Germany’s 24-player squad for October friendlies against Australia and Japan. It is the 19-year-old’s first senior call-up.

Wück said: “Lisa has earned her place in the squad with her performances in pre-season and Arsenal’s first four games of the campaign. The move from Germany to England clearly seems to have done her a lot of good. She’s showing that being young and playing freely can go hand in hand with producing good performances.”

Germany play Australia in Karlsruhe on Friday 9 October (19:30 BST) and Japan in Bremen on Tuesday 13 October (16:45 BST). Wück called both “exactly the kind of games we need to keep developing as a team and take the next steps forward.”

Captain Giulia Gwinn returns. Franziska Kett, Cora Zicai and goalkeeper Laura Dick are back. Bibiane Schulze Solano is in for the first time since November 2025 after a long injury. Kathrin Hendrich, Rebecca Knaak and Nicole Anyomi miss out through injury or fitness. Ann-Katrin Berger sits these two games out after talks with the staff.

Baum joined Arsenal from Germany. The national coach’s line is that the switch has helped. Club form in the first four Women’s Super League matches was enough to get her on the plane.

The same window has been mixed for other north London names. Chloe Kelly was left out of England’s World Cup play-off squad after Wiegman said levels were not what she expected. Leah Williamson, Georgia Stanway and Alessia Russo were included.

For Baum the task is simpler. Two friendlies, a first senior camp, and a chance to show the freedom Wück described. Tickets are already strong in Karlsruhe and Bremen. The audience will be large. The debut, if it comes, will be earned in those minutes rather than in the announcement.
