Manchester City have allegedly been found guilty by an independent commission of 114 of the 115 charges relating to breaches of financial rules. City have maintained their innocence and are expected to appeal the verdict.
If the verdict is upheld, potential punishments reportedly include points deductions, the stripping of past titles and possible expulsion from the Premier League.
Klopp regularly competed with City for the Premier League title during his time as Liverpool manager, finishing second in the 2018/19 and 2021/22 seasons despite recording more than 90 points in both campaigns.
The former Liverpool boss left Anfield in the summer of 2024. The 59-year-old was asked about City being found guilty of the charges during Wednesday’s press conference ahead of Germany’s UEFA Nations League game against Serbia.
Klopp said: “Of course I’ve heard about that, but I haven’t given it much thought. I can only wait and see. I have big respect for Pep Guardiola and City’s style of football; they played fantastic football and were a top class opponent for us.
“If any sanctions are handed out, I have nothing to do with it; I’ll wait and see. I’m far from preparing for a title or anything like that. I’m absolutely fine with what we’ve achieved in Liverpool.
“We fought hard on the pitch. I can’t say more about that because I don’t know the details and I’m not interested in them.”
Speaking in January 2025, when he was Red Bull’s global head of football, Klopp promised to buy beer and hold a ‘parade’ in Mallorca if Liverpool are retrospectively awarded past titles.
Klopp said at the time: “Did you say few months or three? Ah okay. We’re getting closer. Should? I don’t say anything. Would? We had this discussion when we left, if it would happen I told all the people who want it, just book the flight and I buy the beer.
“Whatever we have to celebrate, good weather, we would have our own parade in my garden. God what a headline. We will see. I didn’t follow it all. I’m surprised you’re telling me it’s two months away. Let’s see.”
Klopp recently left his role at Red Bull and took his first managerial job since leaving Liverpool, becoming head coach of the Germany national team. Liverpool are scheduled to face City in the Premier League on October 11, following the international break.
