Everton’s controversial disallowed goal against Ipswich returned to the agenda on Wednesday, while the January transfer picture provided several fresh talking points.
There was also another England appearance for Harrison Armstrong and a first taste of senior training for highly-rated academy prospect Francis Boggan.
Here’s the Everton news and talking points round-up for Wednesday.
Premier League panel backs Barry VAR decision – just
The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel has backed the VAR intervention that denied Thierno Barry a second goal against Ipswich.
The significant detail is the margin. The panel voted 3-2 that VAR was correct to intervene after Brennan Johnson was judged to have affected goalkeeper Christian Walton from an offside position.
Two members believed Johnson’s position and actions hadn’t affected Walton.
That leaves Evertonians with further reason to debate the decision. VAR intervened on the basis that a clear and obvious error had been made, yet two of the five panel members didn’t believe the goal should have been disallowed.
Our full look at the KMI Panel’s 3-2 verdict explains the reasoning behind the decision.
January transfer picture begins to take shape
There were several Everton transfer lines on Wednesday as attention began to turn towards January.
The Blues could reportedly have another opportunity to pursue Juventus midfielder Teun Koopmeiners after tracking the Netherlands international towards the end of the summer window.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has also suggested Everton could listen to offers for Jake O’Brien if the defender’s lack of Premier League minutes continues.
Those reports don’t amount to fresh bids or negotiations, but both situations could be worth watching as the January window approaches.
Everton’s deadline-day decision to secure another loan for Jack Grealish rather than pay Manchester City a permanent transfer fee has also taken on added significance following developments at his parent club.
Armstrong features in England U20 victory
Armstrong came off the bench as England Under-20s beat France 2-1 in Spain on Tuesday.
The Everton midfielder replaced Trey Nyoni in the 59th minute, taking him beyond 120 minutes for the international break after completing England’s opening 3-1 victory against Italy.
There was no senior England action for Jordan Pickford, Jarrad Branthwaite or James Garner. All three were unused substitutes as Thomas Tuchel’s side beat Czechia 2-0 in Prague.

Boggan gets first taste of senior training
Academy prospect Francis Boggan has trained with Everton’s first team for the first time.
The 15-year-old defender has already made rapid progress through the academy and became Everton’s youngest-ever Under-18 player last season at 14 years and 204 days.
A first session with Moyes’ senior group represents another step in his development rather than an indication that a first-team debut is imminent.
There are no Everton players scheduled for international action tonight. The programme resumes on Thursday, when O’Brien’s Republic of Ireland face Austria and Brennan Johnson’s Wales host Norway.
