Chelsea denied penalty as Hampton’s stunning save secures Lyon point on Bompastor’s return

Chelsea earned a 0-0 draw at Lyon as Hannah Hampton’s outstanding late save preserved a Champions League point after VAR overturned a penalty awarded to Lauren James.

Sonia Bompastor’s return to her former club ended with Chelsea reaching four points from two league-phase matches and recording a fifth successive clean sheet.

Bompastor had made two changes to Chelsea’s starting XI, bringing in Veerle Buurman and Sjoeke Nüsken for Katie McCabe and James.

Lyon 0-0 Chelsea: VAR dominates second half

Hampton denied Salma Paralluelo before the interval as neither side found a breakthrough.

Chelsea appealed for a penalty after Tarciane caught Nüsken early in the second half, but a review identified an offside involving Lucy Bronze.

Paralluelo subsequently put the ball in Chelsea’s net, only for an offside decision to rule out her finish.

James then went down under a challenge from Damaris Egurrola. The referee pointed to the spot before reversing her decision after reviewing the monitor, as Sky Sports’ report details.

Hampton delivers decisive late save

James had another opportunity when Alyssa Thompson picked her out, but goalkeeper Grohs stopped her shot.

Hampton then stretched to keep out Ada Hegerberg’s header before Maika Hamano fired narrowly wide at the other end.

According to Chelsea’s official match report, Hampton received treatment following a late collision but completed the game.

Chelsea visit West Ham in the WSL on Sunday. Their next European fixture is against Roma at Plough Lane on 28 October.
