Former Liverpool star Glenn Hysen has expressed his frustration at Alexander Isak once again falling victim to injury after the Reds striker pulled out of the Sweden squad.

The 27-year-old has made an impressive start to the campaign, finding the net four times in Liverpool's opening five Premier League fixtures before also scoring in Sweden's Nations League curtain-raiser against Romania. Yet the striker picked up an injury during that same match which compelled him to leave the squad.

Sweden manager Graham Potter subsequently disclosed that Isak was dealing with a thigh problem, while Liverpool confirmed via a statement that he had

It was confirmed he would undergo additional medical evaluation at the AXA Training Centre.

Isak had endured a difficult debut season with the Reds following his arrival from Newcastle United in a record deal after a protracted summer pursuit that had even seen him down tools at St. James' Park to push through the move.

The striker ultimately battled both poor form and fitness issues during his maiden campaign with Liverpool, suffering further disruption after sustaining a fractured leg halfway through the season, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Restricted to merely 22 outings, he managed just four goals for Arne Slot's team. Nevertheless, after an encouraging World Cup showing with Sweden, he had rediscovered his touch under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

With Isak's injury reported to be minor, questions remain over whether he will be fit for Liverpool's return to club football against Man City on Sunday 11 October.

However, former Reds title-winner Hysen has expressed his sympathy for his fellow Swede following the ill-timed setback, urging caution over rushing him back to fitness.

"It's a shame now that he's starting to get going," he told Sportbibeln. "Because now he was really on the move and scored goals last time and is starting to get going in Liverpool.

"It feels like he's on the right track again. But unfortunately he got injured here. Then he'll have to rest for a while. It's better that he comes back healthy and well, so that he doesn't take a chance and it gets worse.

"I just feel sorry for him now that he is starting to get going again. It gives so much for Liverpool if he is fit too.

"As he was in Newcastle - now it is not the same type of game in Liverpool - but if he can get up to half of what he did in Newcastle then it is really good for Liverpool."
