Jurgen Klopp hints at fresh Florian Wirtz setback with latest Germany decision

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has also spoken out on Manchester City

Former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has provided a significant clue regarding who will skipper Germany in their Nations League encounter with Serbia, potentially denying Florian Wirtz the opportunity to wear the armband.

Klopp, , revealed the player with the most international appearances in the starting XI will lead the team, with both Nico Schlotterbeck and Joshua Kimmich unavailable for the fixture.

At his pre-match media briefing, Klopp stated: "Whoever has the most caps in the starting lineup will wear the armband tomorrow. Feel free to ask [who might be a captain], but I don't reveal the starting lineup now. You can look them up yourselves."

Wirtz will undoubtedly be amongst those in contention to assume the captaincy with 46 caps to his name, though compatriot Serge Gnabry boasts 61 caps, while David Raum sits on 39.

Although Klopp remained tight-lipped about the captaincy decision, he did suggest that Jonas Urbig wouldn't be amongst those under consideration, despite being set to feature in the match.

He stated: "I can only say that Jonas Urbig won't wear the armband in his first international match.", reports the Liverpool Echo.

Germany face Serbia, who sit bottom of their Nations League section, while Klopp's charges have collected just a single point from their opening two fixtures.

They shared the points with the Netherlands earlier in the international window before suffering a 1-0 reverse against Greece in their most recent outing.

Klopp drew parallels between Serbia's style of play and the recent meeting with Ivan Jovanović's outfit. The former Anfield chief commented: "Serbia's approach won't be much different from what Greece did. What makes Serbia particularly difficult to play against is their experience.

"They also have some excellent footballers. They know all the tricks of the trade, so we have to be prepared for that. They have a special mentality.

"It's not the best period in Serbian football at the moment, but the players themselves know what's at stake and have fought for one another.

"An opponent that sits deep is a major challenge for any team, at any stage of development."
