Andoni Iraola manager of Liverpool applauds the fans after the Premier League 2026/27 match between Liverpool FC and Fulham
Liverpool is sweating on the fitness of both Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo for the next week or so, as former striker Alan Smith has suggested two replacement options in the team if both players are out.
This comes ahead of a key match against Manchester City as the Reds return to action after the international break, in a clash at Anfield with plenty of build-up.
Not only are there the historical meetings between the two sides that will play into the entertainment for another instalment of the match, but will add another layer of intrigue, especially when it comes to the atmosphere the away team may receive on Merseyside.
Andoni Iraola's team may have to be at their best for such a game, however, with Enzo Maresca's players starting well after a summer rebuild, sitting top of the Premier League table at this stage.
The size of the task for Liverpool is only made tougher when throwing in the possibility that both Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo could miss the game.
, with the former's concern being described as a minor thigh problem, while the latter landed awkwardly on his ankle and could face a longer spell out.
It would be quite the blow if both are not available to face Man City, considering the impressive start they have made to the campaign so far, leading the way in terms of goals and assists within the team.
With that possibility coming up, former striker Smith has given his thoughts on the pair's absence and some replacement options. Speaking to BestBettingSites, he said: "I mean, it'd be a challenge, because they've both been in good form, really good form, obviously Isak scoring and Gakpo as well and creating.

"They've both really been at it. I mean, there's one or two choices. I did the Carabao game against Spurs when Lewis Koumas played; I gave him man of the match, and he gave the team real energy up front with his pressing and that. So he might deserve a chance.
"Why not? If you can play like that against Spurs, give him a chance in the Premier League. Barcola could move inside; I think he's done that for PSG in the past. They've got a few choices in that respect. But one person's misfortune, it is a chance for somebody else."
It is yet another concern for Iraola to deal with when it comes to his squad's availability, with the manager's ability to deal with unexpected issues and squad depth set to be tested once more.
Liverpool has been competitive in every game so far, even if not all the performances have been top-tier, but Man City will provide the sort of challenge the Reds haven't had just yet.
