Chelsea have enquired about Jarell Quansah as Xabi Alonso looks to plug his leaky defence, according to Bild.
The Blues have conceded the most goals in the Premier League (12), and the Stamford Bridge hierarchy will recognise it as an issue they must address.
Chelsea are now eyeing the Bayer Leverkusen star after a brilliant debut campaign in the Bundesliga following his 2025 summer transfer switch.
The Chelsea target bagged four goals and helped keep five clean sheets in 28 league appearances while winning 60 percent of his aerial and 60% of his ground duels.
Chelsea have failed to keep a league clean sheet in their first five league games. Their defence is threatening to undo the brilliance of the attacking cast.
Maxence Lacroix, whom Chelsea signed this summer, has been very good, but he has not made much of a difference at the back.
Alonso also seems to be struggling to find the right defensive combination in these early weeks.
The Chelsea boss might turn to Quansah to help solidify the rearguard, but the Blues are not alone in the race for his signature.
Real Madrid are keeping tabs. His former club Liverpool, where he won the league, also have a €70 million buyback clause they can exercise until June 2027.
Chelsea do not need Quansah
At Chelsea, Quansah ideally fits in as the right-side centre-half in a back three. However, the Blues have enough cover there.
The West London club has Josh Acheampong, who has the tools to develop into a world-class centre-half, while Wesley Fofana also plays that position.
Fofana should be sold, but even then, Chelsea have Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino waiting in the wings to take the slot. He isn’t much of an upgrade on Sarr.
What the Blues need is a difference-maker a la Virgil Van Dijk to bring calm and order to the rearguard.
Quansah is still learning the ropes and isn’t the defensive titan they are crying out for.
