Klopp plays down prospect of Liverpool being handed Man City titles
Jürgen Klopp has played down the prospect of Liverpool being awarded Premier League titles retrospectively following Manchester City’s financial-rule verdict, insisting he is satisfied with what his former side achieved on the pitch.
Klopp’s Liverpool finished runners-up to City by a single point in both the 2018-19 and 2021-22 Premier League seasons. He joked in 2024 that he would attend a victory parade if Liverpool were eventually handed the titles.
But speaking as Germany head coach ahead of their Nations League meeting with Serbia, Klopp struck a markedly different tone after an independent commission found City guilty of serious financial breaches.
“I also remember what I said: ‘If there’s ever a victory parade, I’ll be there’. It doesn’t feel like that anymore,” Klopp said. “It’s not that I feel I have to have a bus parade. I can just sit back and wait for it to happen.”
The former Liverpool boss also stressed his respect for Pep Guardiola and the football City produced during their rivalry.

“I have huge respect for Pep Guardiola and the football City played during the time we were up against them,” Klopp said. “The sort of football they put on the pitch, the standard is far too high.”

City have denied wrongdoing and are expected to appeal the commission’s findings, while any sporting sanctions remain to be determined.
Klopp said he would not involve himself in the consequences of the case, particularly while the legal process remains ongoing.
“If any sanctions are imposed, I’ve got nothing to do with it,” he added. “I’m a long way from preparing myself for it in any way.”
The 59-year-old also made clear that retrospective titles are not something he feels Liverpool need to validate his achievements.
“I don’t need to be Premier League champions a few more times,” Klopp said. “I’m completely happy with what we’ve achieved. We battled it out on the pitch.”
