Everton expected to look elsewhere as Folarin Balogun rated ‘highly unlikely’

Everton are expected to look elsewhere for another striker in January, with a return for former deadline-day target Folarin Balogun now rated “highly unlikely”.

BBC Radio Merseyside reporter Giulia Bould believes the circumstances surrounding Balogun’s failed £40m summer move make another attempt unlikely when the transfer window reopens.

Everton expected to move on from Balogun

Asked specifically whether Everton could go back for Balogun in January, Bould said in a BBC Radio Merseyside Q&A: “It is highly unlikely.”

She pointed to the medical issues that emerged during the proposed transfer and Balogun’s subsequent decision to leave without completing the move, despite a deal sheet having been submitted.

Bould added that she expects Everton’s hierarchy to be “already looking elsewhere”. Thierno Barry is currently David Moyes’ only recognised striker, leaving little cover should he be unavailable.

The latest assessment follows reports earlier this month that Monaco still intended to find a January solution for Balogun.

Everton had agreed a £40m deal for the USA international on deadline day before concerns emerged during his medical. The structure of the agreement with Monaco was renegotiated, but Balogun eventually decided not to complete the move.

Whether Everton sign another striker in January remains to be seen, and Bould’s comments shouldn’t be mistaken for confirmation of the club’s plans. They do, though, suggest a second attempt to sign Balogun isn’t currently expected.
