Manchester City’s Premier League status is in question after being found guilty of 114 financial rule breaches.

Indeed, Manchester City’s current situation is perhaps the most remarkable moment in Premier League history, and depending on the results of an appeal, a severe punishment could be headed City’s way.

There’s been talk of City being stripped of titles, and, perhaps even more interestingly, there’s been suggestions City could be expelled from the league and relegated.

If City are relegated, there’s bound to be a fire sale at the Etihad, and one player who will almost certainly be on the move is Erling Haaland.

Haaland has already been linked to Arsenal, and while it may sound far-fetched for a star player to join a rival under these circumstances, this has happened before.

Erling Haaland could become the modern day Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Cast your mind back 20 years, and you may remember that Juventus were relegated to Serie B off the back of the Calciopoli scandal in Italy.

Juventus had the book thrown at them in 2006, and they were immediately relegated to Serie B for the 2006/07 campaign.

Understandably, a number of notable players wanted to leave Juve at the time, as the likes of Gianluca Zambrotta, Fabio Cannavaro and Lillian Thuram found themselves on the market.

However, Juventus’ jewel in the crown at that time was a young striker named Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Ibrahimovic would have had his pick of clubs across Europe at that point, but he actually chose to stay in Italy and join one of Juventus’ biggest rivals – Inter Milan.

This was a surprising move, but ultimately it was one that Ibrahimovic felt comfortable with. And while Haaland will be able to have his pick of clubs if Manchester City also suffer the fate of relegation, he could make a similar choice and stay in England.

Haaland is on track to break every Premier League goalscoring record there is, and that may mean there is a temptation to stay in England and join a team like Arsenal.
