After being written off by many Liverpool supporters following a dismal third season at Anfield, Alexis Mac Allister has come out swinging in 2026/27.

The 27-year-old has arguably been the Reds’ best player under Andoni Iraola so far, making a mockery of suggestions that he should have been sold during the summer.

The first signs that a revival was underway came during the World Cup, where he looked back to his old self while reaching the final with Argentina. Having taken that form into his outings for Liverpool, Mac Allister returned to his native country to face Bolivia on Wednesday night, and turned in a performance which has been hailed by the national media.

Mac Allister the ‘machine’ shines for Argentina

Even throughout his struggles with Liverpool last season, Mac Allister remained a key player for Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina. He showed why during the World Cup, and with his club form now catching up, there is no suggestion he will fade any time soon.

In fact, according to TyC Sports, he could even grow further in importance for the national team. Following the bombshell news that Lionel Messi will retire after the Albiceleste’s game against Benin on October 6th, they suggest that it is Mac Allister who should take on his iconic No. 10 shirt ‘just like he does at Liverpool.’

This comes on the back of a performance which saw him described as a ‘modern midfielder’ who is ‘constantly moving up and down the pitch,’ while always being ‘ready to create’, during Argentina’s 4-0 win.

Reporter Ernesto Provitilo throws the Liverpool star’s candidacy for the No. 10 shirt into the ring, claiming that Mac Allister has shown himself to be the ‘right man’ with this performance.

He goes even further, claiming that the former Brighton man is ‘the heart of the team’, praising his positioning, his ball-carrying and his creative spark.

Ole were also impressed, if on a slightly lesser scale, highlighting Mac Allister’s assist for Lautaro Martinez, in which the Reds’ midfielder flicked a clever around-the-corner pass with the outside of his toe, which the striker eventually finished off.

Hailing Mac Allister as a ‘machine,’ they note that he was the team’s playmaker in Messi’s absence, adding that he popped up both in an attacking role and as a deeper-lying presence.

Game by game Mac Allister is showing why Liverpool need to rethink their decision not to begin contract extension talks with him, because, on this evidence, they would be fools to willingly allow him to walk out of the door in the near future.

He still needs to prove it again across a full season, but it is clear now that last term was simply a blip for Mac Allister. For club and country, he is showing his best self once again.
