A previous comparison between Man City and Liverpool was made by Trent Alexander-Arnold, which may make even more sense after a guilty verdict placed upon the former

Trent Alexander-Arnold's previous comments about Manchester City's financial situation compared to Liverpool have come to light again, after the club was found guilty of all but one of the charges brought against it by the Premier League.
It marked the first significant milestone in the legal case between Man City and the Premier League in almost two years, with the independent panel deliberating on the final decision since late 2024. That follows the alleged breaches being charged in 2023, following a five-year investigation into the team's financial situation from 2009 until 2018.
Those 115 charges include allegations of inaccurate financial reporting, which surrounded the potential for inflated sponsorship income and off-book payments to staff, as well as subsequent breaches of financial rules and non-compliance in the investigation process. All but one of those charges were ruled in favor of the Premier League, though Man City still deny any wrongdoing and are set to appeal the decision.

While it remains to be seen what the outcome of that decision is, and whether there will be any sanctions that follow, there is likely to be a wait with the guilty verdict hanging over the rest of the division.
It has led to discussions around what the right sanction would be if the decision is upheld, with the potential for a fine, points deductions, and even the stripping of titles.
When it comes to the latter, there has been some reassessment from some corners as to what those seasons now mean, and whether association with rule-breaking would taint the way those titles are seen. That is especially the case when considering the financial advantage that Man City appeared to get from the alleged inflation of commercial revenue, though the club deny those claims.

With that in mind, Alexander-Arnold's previous comparison between Liverpool and Man City has come to light again, and is a pertinent reflection on the situation. Speaking back in March 2024 about the clash between the two sides over the years, he said: "Looking back on this era, although they've [Man City] won more titles than us [Liverpool] and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially.
"How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we've done it, probably means more to our fans.”
With the independent panel deeming that Man City had broken the rules between 2009 and 2018, the reflection on the era of battles between the club and Liverpool may be looked upon different.
Jurgen Klopp and his team went toe-to-toe on many occasions with Pep Guardiola, and while he only won the one league title to show for it, the team was built from a different position with many players being fondly remembered from that time.
