Liverpool are likely to remain in the hunt to sign a new winger in 2027, despite spending big on Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz over the summer.

The Reds were desperate to bolster their attacking firepower, and were targeting another wide forward right up until the final days of the window, seeing bids for Yankuba Minteh and Ismaila Sarr turned down.

Crysencio Summerville was another who was rumoured to be on Liverpool‘s radar, but the West Ham United forward ultimately joined Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal. Summerville went on to star for the Netherlands at the World Cup, and after his personal trainer revealed that the former Leeds man did in fact speak to Liverpool during the summer, Summerville has shared where he sees his career going next.

Summerville keen on European return

Summerville has not exactly been tearing up the Saudi League since joining Al Hilal, scoring two goals in nine matches so far, but the 24-year-old has been showing his quality with the Dutch national team.

Now under the management of Barcelona legend Xavi, Summerville appeared alongside his new boss during a press conference on Wednesday, when he confirmed that money had been a motivating factor behind his decision to join Al Hilal, and that he plans to return to Europe and become one of the best forwards on the continent in the future.

“I have big ambitions,” he said. “My personal trainer sees every day how hard I work. We have a plan, and our plan is that one day I will become one of the best attackers in Europe. I have simply always believed in myself and my abilities.”

Summerville’s trainer confirms Liverpool talks

Coincidentally – or perhaps not – the trainer who Summerville mentions, Ivandro Monteiro, has been speaking this week about the Dutchman as well.

In a conversation with ESPN Netherlands, Monteiro confirmed that a whole host of clubs were interested in Summerville before this season started, naming Liverpool among those who had spoken to him about a potential move.

“He called me at one point and said: ‘You’re not going to believe this.’ He told me that a lot of clubs were interested. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, AS Roma, Liverpool, Manchester United… all clubs that had spoken to him,” he said.

“I said to him: ‘Just wait. See what happens. You never know.’” A few days later, another phone call followed. This time it was about Al-Hilal. “He said: ‘Listen to this, this is crazy.’ Then he told me about Al-Hilal and what they would do for him.”

While Summerville is still young, it would be a surprise if Liverpool were to come back in for him in 2027 or beyond. The Reds clearly have an interest, but the move to Saudi, coupled with their own recruitment strategy, should mean that he has missed his chance of a spell at Anfield.
