Juventus make Virgil van Dijk enquiry

Juventus have stepped up their interest in Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk as the defender’s contract situation continues to attract attention across Europe.

Van Dijk’s current Liverpool deal runs until the summer of 2027, but the 35-year-old has yet to open talks over a further extension. He signed his existing two-year contract in April 2025.

Asked about his future after Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Bournemouth, Van Dijk said he was “just focusing on the present” and confirmed there was nothing new to report regarding his contract.

Liverpool have not yet offered the defender a new deal, with Van Dijk set to turn 36 before the start of the 2027-28 season.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are among the clubs monitoring the situation and sent a representative to Amsterdam to watch Van Dijk during the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Germany in the Nations League.

The accreditation was reportedly in the name of an assistant to Juventus technical director Ricky Massara and sporting director Marco Ottolini. The representative is also said to have close ties to head coach Luciano Spalletti.

Van Dijk is reportedly one of several potential free-agent targets being assessed by Juventus, with the club also monitoring defenders and midfielders including Fikayo Tomori, Mateo Kovacic and David Raum.

According to the Italian outlet, the quality of Van Dijk is not considered to be in question, although his fitness is understood to be an important consideration for Juventus and other clubs assessing a potential move for the veteran centre-back.

The Liverpool captain has won the Champions League and Premier League during his time at Anfield, lifting the European trophy in 2019 and helping the club win the English top flight in 2020 and 2025.

He has made 380 appearances for Liverpool, and could offer Juventus considerable experience and leadership if they decide to pursue a deal.

The report adds that Van Dijk could become a more realistic option if Juventus sell Gleison Bremer next summer, with the Brazil international regularly attracting interest from English clubs.

Juventus were also monitoring Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey during the Netherlands’ international camp.

However, their assessment was cut short when the forward was forced off after 35 minutes with a suspected hamstring injury.
