Bompastor on Chelsea clashes in the last week: ‘Both games were very good performances’

Sonia Bompastor believes Chelsea have represented themselves well in a heavy week of football.

The Bluesbeat Arsenal 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on the weekend to reinforce their desire to chase Manchester City at the top of the Women’s Super League. They then travelled to OL Lyonnes, the eight-time champions of Europe, and earned a 0-0 draw that sustained the unbeaten start to the season.

·‘I’m proud that we could have such a high-level performance’

Chelsea have now picked up four points from their first two Champions League games, having defeated FK Austria Wien last Wednesday. Bompastor believes that the team should grow through the experience of negotiating the tight turnaround of the schedule as greater challenges await them.

“I'm really proud of my team for not conceding here in this stadium against a strong team and a strong attacking line. We are also happy about the way we performed with the ball.

“We were able to exploit different spaces between the lines, but also in the spacing behind. The only thing missing was probably the goal. We created enough big chances for us to be able to score.

“It was a very good game with two top teams. I’m happy it gives a good image of women's football. I’m proud that we could have such a high-level performance after playing Arsenal on Sunday. Both games were very good performances and that gives us confidence.

An emotional return to Lyon

“Tonight was really emotional. I spent so much time here at this club, in this stadium, so it felt great being able to see so many people I worked with. Being the Chelsea head coach for Chelsea and coming back to this stadium with my team was a proud moment as well.

“The experience I got here at Lyon helped me to grow as a manager. I'm much more confident now. I’m different in a good way, I would say. More mature and making better decisions.”
