Personal trainer reveals Liverpool contact with Crysencio Summerville

Liverpool signed Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola this summer but kept looking for another winger.

Munoz joined from Osasuna for £34.5m. Barcola arrived from Paris Saint-Germain for a guaranteed £106m, which can rise to £123m with add-ons.

Barcola is primarily a left winger, and Liverpool do not have an out-and-out right winger in their first-team squad. That gap shaped the rest of their window.

Brighton rejected two offers for Yankuba Minteh, the second worth €70m. The club wanted £80m, and Liverpool were unwilling to pay it.

Liverpool then approached Crystal Palace about Ismaila Sarr and were turned down.

They also blocked Manchester City’s bid for Cody Gakpo and finished the window without a further winger.

Minteh and Sarr were not the only wide players to speak to Liverpool, however. Another name has now emerged through ESPN Netherlands.

The broadcaster spoke to Ivandro Monteiro, the personal trainer of Netherlands international Crysencio Summerville.

Monteiro says Liverpool and Manchester United were among the clubs that wanted to sign the 24-year-old this summer.

ESPN NL describes Monteiro as Summerville’s “second father.”

According to reports in the Netherlands, he has worked with the winger for almost 13 years. Monteiro says Summerville told him about the interest in a phone call.

“He called me at one point and said: ‘You’re not going to believe this’,” Monteiro said.

“He told me that a lot of clubs were interested. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Roma, Liverpool, Manchester United… all clubs that had spoken to him. I told him: ‘Just wait a bit. See what happens. You never know’.”

Monteiro’s account relays what the player told him. It does not establish that any of those clubs made a formal bid to West Ham.

Crysencio Summerville joined West Ham from Leeds United in August 2024. He made 56 appearances for the London club and scored eight goals. West Ham were relegated from the Premier League last season.

Al-Hilal then moved for him. The Hammers secured a €70m deal, which includes €65m in fixed fee. Al-Hilal announced a four-year contract on 24 July, and Summerville signed at the club’s training camp in Austria.

Monteiro says Summerville called again with news of the Saudi offer.

“He said: ‘Listen to this, this is crazy.’ Then he told me about Al-Hilal and what they would be willing to pay for him. And he would earn a lot more there too,” Monteiro explained.

The trainer told him to accept.

“I said immediately: ‘Boy, pack your bags and go. Don’t think about it’. You are still young and you can always go back. The league is tough and people underestimate the level there. But for him, it was a new challenge and a chance to develop further.”

According to The Athletic, Liverpool have held an interest in Summerville earlier this year, but the club decided to move on to other targets.

Crysencio Summerville made his Netherlands debut on 3 June in a friendly against Algeria. He scored in the World Cup opener against Japan on 14 June, a 2-2 draw.

At Al-Hilal, he plays in a front three with Ollie Watkins and Gabriel Martinelli under Simone Inzaghi, and he has scored twice in his first seven league matches.
