Everton’s late attempt to sign Joshua Zirkzee came to nothing on deadline day, but barely a month later there may already be reason to wonder whether the conversation could resume in January.
The Everton approach wasn’t merely transfer-window gossip. The Blues offered to take Zirkzee on a season-long loan after their move for Folarin Balogun ran into trouble, only for Manchester United to reject the proposal.
United’s problem was timing. With the deadline approaching, they didn’t have enough time to source a replacement for the Dutch forward. That problem won’t necessarily exist when the window reopens.
Could Everton try again for Zirkzee?
Zirkzee is still waiting for his first Premier League start of the season. He has made four substitute appearances, totalling just 70 minutes, although his lack of club football hasn’t prevented a recall to the Netherlands squad.
More interesting from an Everton perspective is what happens next. Reports immediately after the window closed suggested Zirkzee’s future could be revisited in January, although there is no suggestion yet that Everton have renewed their interest.
The logic behind the original move hasn’t disappeared. David Moyes was left with Thierno Barry as his only recognised senior striker after Beto departed and the Balogun deal collapsed. United, meanwhile, would have considerably more time to find a replacement should they decide Zirkzee can leave.
Everton wanted him in September. Zirkzee still isn’t starting at Old Trafford. Come January, it would hardly be a surprise if the question is asked again.
